Body Mass Index (BMI) is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared. It is a quick screening number, not a diagnosis.

Categories

  • Asian cut-offs: under 18.5 underweight, 18.5–22.9 normal, 23–24.9 overweight, 25 and above obese.
  • WHO general cut-offs: under 18.5 underweight, 18.5–24.9 normal, 25–29.9 overweight, 30 and above obese.

South Asians tend to carry more body fat at a given BMI, which is why lower cut-offs are used for Indians.

Limits of BMI

BMI does not distinguish muscle from fat and ignores where fat is stored. Waist size, blood tests and a doctor’s assessment give a better picture.
